ADONIS XIV faced censorship and was forbidden for a long time. Without dialog, its symbolism was deemed too direct. The film touches on an eternal theme: Adonis XIV is the billy goat which has to lead the other animals to slaughterhouse. As the fourteenth of its kind, it will undergo the same fate as its companions and will join its predecessors on the commemorative plaque. Shelved for years, the film endured as a testament to the resilience of meaning, even in silence. Two 35mm positive prints of ADONIS XIV exist in Arsenal’s archive, one of which will be digitized on the occasion of this screening, offering a renewed chance to engage with this important work.

Another film from the Arsenal archive shown in this program is GELIN. Set in the desert, Ogulkeyik lives with her father-in-law, waiting for her husband’s return from war. When he is declared missing, she clings to hope and refuses to remarry, carrying on her daily tasks with quiet determination. GELIN is a landmark in Turkmen cinema, capturing the life of Turkmen pastoral nomads while celebrating love, endurance, and devotion.
